Week 21 -Oregon City - May 22 - May 31, 2023
A very fast week just flew by. And...add on Memorial Day.
Flowers are blooming everywhere in the woods.
Montia siberica or Candy Flower makes a carpet of flowers in the woods.
This little one is a Scrophulariaceae which sometimes grows in our lawn. I've never seen it in the woods before.
Monkey flower
New growth on the Yew tree
The daisies on First Slope are magnificent
ut/split/stacked.
I ventured down into Salmonberry Flat on the south side of Sector 4. It was a mess. I'd sprayed blackberries last year and the old canes were dried and hardened. I had repel down using a rope tied to the hitch of the ATV. I cut all the canes into 6- inch pieces and then went down with the sprayer and, hopefully, sprayed and killed all the new new blackberries and bed straw.
Thursday we all celebrated Jane's birthday - The Little Mermaid. Everyone loved it - I was a bit overwhelmed by all the glitz
Sometime ago Dad, while using the mower, snagged a piece of shade cloth which got stuck in one of the mower blades. Since then he has tried many times to remove the blade to sharpen not. each time he has a new plan. This time he had a new plan - using a freezing spray which will release rust and stuff.......didn't work.
I've started to clear out Far West Slope. Lots of old blackberries, filberts, fallen logs. It's a challenge.
Before and after.
There is this remaining bit of clematis. I sprayed it last year and cut a bunch off the fence wire. But some still remains.....but with my trusty clippers, I will prevail.
I'm making a new wildlife habitat on First Slope. Pulled up some rotten snags that had fallen and laid them on the wooden frame we had in the ack of the van when we drove to the east coast.
It keeps getting bigger.
These pieces had fallen on First Slope. These are now in the basement.
The Osmaronia cerasiformis has formed seeds. I've never seen these before.
I've put little mesh bags over some of the clusters so we can collect the seeds.
A li
A little more than a week later her is what the seeds look like. Any seeds that were not in a little mesh bags are gone - eaten by birds.
Memorial Day weekend - on Sunday we went to the cemetery to take care of Ray's family's graves.
A good way to end the week was to sing Happy Birthday to Jane and Ruby.
And in to the next week....a bit.
Bev had the idea of going on a bike ride on Monday, Memorial Day. She'd been to the Champoeg Park area for some sort of event and learned abot a bike path that goes to Butteville where there is a cute little restaurant. So, we loaded up the bikes and headed to the park. This line up of bikes is, unfortunately, in the shade, so our smiling faces can't be seen. Bay and large, everyone was happy the whole time.
I teamed up with Holland who rode the Piccolo Tag-a-long bike. She was a real trooper...but she did ask me too often about when we "would get there."
The little restaurant turned out to be great...kind of spendy, but worth it. Our family filled up the outside eating area.
In the evening we went to Travis' for a bar-b-que. Lots of good food, and we had a birthday cake for Dolores.
I liked these pollen clusters on the Ponderosa pines.
The forest is looking beautiful
