#13 - Walking the Camino - May 4, 2016

11th day of walking
Book - 14.3 miles
Map My Walk - 15.5 miles, 7 hours
Fitbit - 37,870 steps, 16.14 miles

Today we didn't walk through any vineyards. The whole day from about 7:30 to 4:00 looked pretty much like this with various shades of green and a few blotches of yellow

We did see a few new plants.
Hops (for flavoring beer). It's hard to see because it's so early in the morning and there isn't much sun

A maple tree. Woo hoo!

We went through six towns. Only one is a  "real" town with businesses and commerce. The others are little bitty ancient towns, usually on a hill, where the farm owners live, I think).
Granon - pop 307
Redecilla del Camino - pop 137
Castildelgado - pop 54
Viloria de la Rioja - pop 60
Villamayor del Rio -.- pop 52

Santo Domingo de la Calzada was fun. It had an old part of town where we found a candy store with all kinds of goodies

A cinnamon crisp dipped chocolate

And truffles (below) and choc covered potato chips (above). What could be better than chips dipped in chocolate?

A new logo in Santo Domingo. It is cast in the concrete slab that covers the drain in the middle of the streets

A very artistic fountain

Regular fountain

A bicycle wash

Went to the modern part of town to find an ATM.

Neat tree lined sidewalks

As we left town we walked through a food processing area. Here are totes filled  filled with seed potatoes. Lots of humongous trucks loaded with stuff coming and going

In one little town we got there in time to experience an outdoor market featuring clothes

There was an old church that we went into

There was a pharmacy on the square with a vending machine full of first aid supplies

Remember the mountain that we walked around?  Here is our last view of it amidst the green wheat fields

Approaching our alberge in Villamayor del Rio

Our room. We get to put our packs on the top bunk which has no mattress

We're waiting for our dinner at the alberge. Then we'll go to a bar down the road where there's free wifi.  We're sitting on the steps outside this relatively fancy restaurant.
